Carlo Petrini was a gastronome, journalist and writer, as well as the founder of the Slow Food movement. Established in 1986, the movement went global in 1989 to champion local cuisines, food quality and biodiversity. During his university years, he devoted himself to politics and community activism, before establishing himself as a renowned food and wine expert and publicist.

Hailing from Bra and the landscapes of the Langhe and Roero, he presented a vision of food that was not only about taste, but also about the land, labour, memory and justice. He promoted Terra Madre, an international network of food communities founded in 2004, and was one of the founders of the University of Gastronomic Sciences in Pollenzo. This institution was conceived as a place for studying and discussing themes such as food, the environment and gastronomic cultures.

In 2026, Petrini was honored with the special Propheta in Patria prize in recognition of his contributions to his home region.

Auf diesem Weg förderte er Terra Madre, das 2004 als internationales Netzwerk der Lebensmittelgemeinschaften ins Leben gerufen wurde. Zudem gehörte er zu den Gründern der Universität der gastronomischen Wissenschaften in Pollenzo, die als Ort des Studiums und des Austauschs zu den Themen Ernährung, Umwelt und gastronomische Kulturen konzipiert wurde.

Im Jahr 2026 würdigte ihn der Premio Ancalau mit der Sonderauszeichnung Propheta in Patria, die ihm als Zeichen der Dankbarkeit seiner Heimat verliehen wurde.

Pendant ses années universitaires, il s’est consacré à la politique et au militantisme associatif, avant de se faire connaître comme œnologue, gastronome et publiciste.

Depuis Bra et les paysages des Langhe et du Roero, il a diffusé dans le monde une conception de l’alimentation liée non seulement au goût, mais aussi à la terre, au travail, à la mémoire et à la justice. Dans cette démarche, il a notamment promu Terra Madre, un réseau international de communautés de la nourriture né en 2004, et a été l’un des fondateurs de l’université des sciences gastronomiques de Pollenzo, un lieu d’étude et de réflexion sur les thèmes de l’alimentation, de l’environnement et des cultures gastronomiques.

En 2026, on lui a dedié la distinction spéciale « Propheta in Patria », en signe de gratitude de la part de son territoire.
