Gianmaria Testa was one of Italy’s most original singer-songwriters of the late 20th century, combining his Langhe roots with an international outlook. Born into a farming family where the love of music and singing was deeply alive, he worked on national railways for many years, eventually becoming stationmaster at Cuneo’s main train station. This daily experience became part of his imagination, and it is clearly reflected in Le donne nelle stazioni (1995).

He was discovered early on in France, where he enjoyed great success at the Olympia. The turning point came with his victories at the musical Festival di Recanati in 1993 and 1994, launching a long season of concerts in Italy, France, Germany, Canada and Portugal, as well as attracting significant media attention. One of his most notable works is Da questa parte del mare (2006), a concept album about contemporary migration which won the Premio Targa Tenco in 2007. 

Gianmaria Testa war einer der originellsten Liedermacher Italiens in der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts, dem es gelang, seine Verbundenheit mit der Langhe mit internationaler Ausstrahlung zu verbinden. Er stammte aus einer Bauernfamilie, in der die Liebe zur Musik und zum Gesang sehr lebendig war. Er arbeitete lange Zeit bei der Eisenbahn und wurde schließlich Bahnhofsvorsteher am Hauptbahnhof von Cuneo. Diese alltägliche Erfahrung floss in seine Vorstellungswelt ein und taucht deutlich in seinem Werk Le donne nelle stazioni (1995) wieder auf.

Er wurde früh in Frankreich entdeckt und feierte im Olympia große Erfolge. Der Durchbruch gelang ihm mit den Siegen beim Festival di Recanati 1993 und 1994. Es folgten eine lange Konzertreihe in Italien, Frankreich, Deutschland, Kanada und Portugal sowie große Aufmerksamkeit in der Presse. Unter seinen Werken gilt Da questa parte del mare (2006) als Wendepunkt: ein Konzeptalbum über zeitgenössische Migration, das 2007 den Premio Targa Tenco gewann. 

Gianmaria Testa est l’un des auteurs-compositeurs-interprètes les plus originaux de la seconde moitié du XXème siècle italien, capable de concilier ses racines langaroles avec une dimension internationale. Issu d’une famille d’agriculteurs où l’amour de la musique et du chant était très présent, il a longtemps travaillé pour les chemins de fer, jusqu’à devenir chef de gare à la gare principale de Cuneo : une expérience quotidienne qui a imprégné son imaginaire et qui resurgit avec clarté dans Le donne nelle stazioni (1995).

Il a rapidement été découvert en France, où il a remporté un grand succès à l’Olympia. Le moment clé s’est produit avec ses victoires au Festival di Recanati, en 1993 et 1994, qui ont marqué le début d’une longue série de concerts en Italie, en France, en Allemagne, au Canada et au Portugal, ainsi que d’une importante couverture médiatique. Parmi ses œuvres, Da questa parte del mare (2006) est considéré comme un tournant : un album conceptuel sur les migrations contemporaines qui a remporté le Premio Targa Tenco en 2007.
